Palafox Street is downtown Pensacola’s main street, running from the Pensacola Bay waterfront at Plaza de Luna north through the city’s historic business district. Its blocks hold the Saenger Theatre, Plaza Ferdinand VII, the Saturday Palafox Market and a long row of restaurants and bars, with the Seville Historic District a few blocks east and Community Maritime Park to the west. The Downtown Improvement Board runs downtown’s events and marketing.

The street

The Palafox Historic Business District, eight blocks of downtown’s commercial core roughly between Wright and Main streets, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2016; its period of significance runs from 1880 to 1965. Landmarks along the way:

  • Plaza Ferdinand VII, on Palafox between Government and Zaragoza streets, a National Historic Landmark and one of Palafox Market’s two homes.
  • The Old County Courthouse, at Palafox and Government streets, base of Winterfest each holiday season.
  • The Saenger Theatre, 118 S. Palafox St., built in 1925 for vaudeville and silent movies.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza, home of Palafox Market North and the Wednesday holiday market.
