Hurricane Isaias: pickup changes
The city postponed Friday, Oct. 9, garbage, bulk, recycling and yard waste collection because of Hurricane Isaias and asked residents not to put their containers out. Friday’s garbage is now scheduled for Monday, Oct. 12, according to the Sanitation Services page.
Do not pile storm debris at the curb yet. The city’s Hurricane Isaias questions and answers say to wait for the city to announce its post-storm debris process, that debris may need to be separated by type, and that collection can take days or weeks with more than one pass. Keep piles out of the road, off storm drains and away from utility poles. Do not burn storm debris inside city limits. Report trees and debris blocking a city street to 311.
What day is my pickup?
Type your address into the city’s collection day lookup to see your garbage day and your yard waste day. If you have curbside recycling, it is picked up on the same day as your yard waste. You can sign up for text or email notices of schedule changes through the city’s Notify Me service.
Garbage cart rules
The city’s garbage page sets these rules for the black city-owned roll carts:
- Put the cart out no later than 6 a.m. on collection day, and bring it in by 6 a.m. the day after.
- Place it within 2 feet of the curb with the opening facing the street, not in the street.
- Leave 5 feet of clearance on all sides from mailboxes, poles, parked cars, low wires and tree limbs.
- Drain household waste and bag raw garbage.
- Only city-provided containers are collected.
Tires, lead-acid batteries, used motor oil, pesticides, paint and some household cleaners are not collected. Dirt, concrete, bricks, rocks, mortar and roofing materials are not accepted either, under section 4-3-62 of the city code. Ordinary alkaline batteries and empty aerosol cans can go in the garbage cart, according to the city’s sanitation questions page.
Curbside recycling
Recycling in Pensacola is opt-in. The city paused citywide recycling in the last quarter of 2023 and has since brought it back as a sign-up service. Sign up on the curbside recycling page, by calling 311 or by calling 850-435-1890. A recycling container and a guide to what is accepted are delivered to your home.
City residents can also drop off recycling at the Transfer Station, 100 W. Leonard St., 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The drop-off is for city residents only.
Yard waste and bulky items
Crews collect yard waste once a week: grass, hedge clippings, pine straw, leaves and limbs no longer than 6 feet and no thicker than 8 inches. Tree stumps and trunks are not collected.
Old furniture, appliances and small amounts of debris from home repairs are picked up by special collection for a fee. A scheduled pickup costs significantly less than an unscheduled one, so call 850-435-1890 or use the city’s online form first. The city does not take concrete, bricks, dirt, sod, shingles or hazardous waste, and contractors must haul away their own debris.
