The Navy has named the three NAS Pensacola sailors killed when their car caught fire at M and Cervantes streets Oct. 24. Their units, home states and the investigation.

Three sailors stationed at Naval Air Station Pensacola were killed in a car crash in Pensacola early Saturday, Oct. 24.

Updated Oct. 29: the Navy has released the sailors’ names, ranks and home states. Pensacola police are leading the investigation with help from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.

The crash was reported at about 1:35 a.m. at M Street and Cervantes Street, the Pensacola Police Department said. Officers found the car on fire when they arrived, police said. WEAR-TV, FOX10 News and Stars and Stripes carried the department’s account.

Police said all three people in the car died. The department is leading the investigation, with help from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, WEAR-TV reported from the department’s account. Police have not said what caused the crash.

The Navy said NCIS involvement is common when a service member dies outside combat without medical oversight, Navy Times reported.

Who the sailors were

Naval Education and Training Command named the three sailors Monday, Oct. 27. Stars and Stripes, Navy Times and WEAR-TV carried the Navy’s statement. The sailors were:

  • Aviation Ordnanceman Airman Apprentice Drekwon Bagley of Michigan, assigned to Naval Air Technical Training Center
  • Aviation Ordnanceman Airman Recruit Francois Longdayeyambete of Massachusetts, assigned to Naval Air Technical Training Center
  • Airman Apprentice David Deanda of California, assigned to Naval Aviation Schools Command

Both commands are based at NAS Pensacola. Airman recruit and airman apprentice are the Navy’s two most junior enlisted ranks. Naval Air Technical Training Center trains sailors and Marines in aircraft maintenance and weapons handling.

The Navy first confirmed the deaths, without names, in a statement on Saturday. “The three service members were a Navy E-1 and E-2 assigned to Naval Air Technical Training Center and a Navy E-2 assigned to Naval Aviation Schools Command,” the command said then. FOX10 News and Stars and Stripes carried it.

“The Navy mourns the loss of our shipmates and extends our deepest condolences to the Sailors’ families,” the statement said. “Grief counseling service and support are available through local Navy chaplains.”
